What is Global Warming?

Global warming is the increasing of temperatures on Earth, caused by greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere – leading to the greenhouse effect. The burning of coal, oil and natural gas are all contributing factors to greenhouse effect. The term 'greenhouse effect' is used because the Earth basically acts as one big greenhouse. The atmospheric gases, especially carbon dioxide, block the Suns heat from escaping the Earth's atmosphere, meaning that more heat is trapped in the Earth's atmosphere and less heat escapes back into space - thus the Earth's temperatures increase.

The high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, caused by cars, power plants and other emissions, will lead to further global warming – unless we all contribute to making the Earth greener. However, some will argue that some effects of global warming will not be able to be prevented in time, so we need to consider ways to adapting to these affects.

Global warming is seen as a major environmental hazard, due to the fact that rising sea levels and climate change will have serious repercussions for us, and nature, in the future. The rising sea levels, caused by the melting of the polar ice caps, will seriously affect low lying counties, such as Bangladesh - who already have enough problems to deal with as it is. Environmental issues include extreme weather conditions and how the ever changing temperatures will effect nature's natural cycle.
